Best Practice #4: Predict and Prevent
The purpose of this best practice is to use predictive and preventive
maintenance methods to reduce unscheduled downtime. The Activplant
Performance Management system collects production counts, machine
cycles and other critical usage metrics and then triggers appropriate
proactive countermeasures based on these metrics. With Activplant's
optional Enterprise Gateway module you can feed this critical information
to corporate business systems, such as CMMS, ERP and BI systems.
You use analytical tools and reports, such as MTBF and MTTR charts,
to predict and prevent maintenance breakdowns.
The benefits of the best practice include:
- Reduced variances in scrap, rework and overtime
- Improved delivery performance
- Reduced labor and MRO material costs
- Reduced tooling costs
- Life cycle cost of tools and dies
- Administrative tool purchasing expenses
- On transfer machining lines, reductions in direct and indirect tool costs
through predicted, block tool changes

Identify trends in increased downtime or repair time using the MTBF and MTTR and trend view. You want to aim for a high MTBF and a low MTTR.
